Exercise

1/22/09

It's a new year and you can't get on a website or pick up a magazine or newspaper without seeing something about 2009 resolutions. In truth, the resolutions are the same every year: to lose weight and exercise more. And let's face it--as much as we try to adhere to our resolutions when we're at home, it's even more difficult when we are traveling. So here are a few helpful tips to start the New Year off right: Keep a set of workout clothing in the luggage you usually take with you when traveling; leave it there even when your bag is just sitting in your closet at home. Some friends of mine also put a bathing suit in the bag. That way, when you leave, you won't forget any of it. Check to make sure that your hotel has an onsite facility that will be open when your schedule will give you time to use it. If you are starting at 8am and working 12 hours a day, a health club that closes at 6pm isn't going to do you much good. If you don't want to go to the health club, then download a routine that you can do in your room onto your laptop or MP3 player and keep it with you at all times.

For those runners out there, you don't have to run alone. Contact a health club or running store and inquire about running clubs, and join one of them for your daily run.

Now for the mindset - make an effort to do some type of physical activity every day while you are gone. Doesn't matter if it's 10 minutes or 2 hours; just do something and remember not to beat yourself up for the shoulda, coulda, woulda's. It's more important to do something, rather than nothing at all, even if that something is less than the ideal workout.
