Nighttime safety

11/22/08

Like all of us, I am struck by the horror of Mumbai. At the same time, I remind myself of the importance of knowing the way out of a hotel building. As I walk to my room, I always check to make sure I know where the fire escape is and how many room doors separate it from my hotel room. That way, if I have to escape in the dark or in smoke, I can count the doors with my hands as I move down the hall and know where the fire stair will be. Over the years, I have also learned to keep a bag right next to my bed - just in case I need to evacuate the room quickly. I keep in it what I feel I must take with me if I need to leave in an emergency: a flashlight, room key, medicine, phone and charger, wallet. I have been awakened in the middle of the night by the fire alarm, and all I needed to do was grab my bag, throw on a robe and shoes and make a quick exit. Figure out what you need to do to be ready for a quick escape and make that preparation part of your nightly routine while you are traveling.
