For women going places

Entertaining at night

4/22/08

Baseball season is upon us. Being the avid fan that I am, it's one of the few pleasures I award myself while I'm on the road. There's something very relaxing about spending an evening in a ballpark and getting lost in the game. Yes, I score the games - truth be told it's the best way for me to know what's really going on and stay immersed in the game. On the other hand, most travelers are not sports fanatics like I am, but still enjoy going out after a day's work.

Many women ask me if I will sit in a bar alone and have a drink (when I'm not at the ballpark, of course). My answer is a resounding YES, but not in just any bar. The key to finding a bar that works for me lies with the bartender. Before I settle into a seat, I will stand in the back of the room and watch the bartender - if she is aware of her customers and what's happening in the bar, then I'll feel comfortable sitting down. I will never sit in a bar where the bartender is reading the paper or doing something other than being engaged with the clientele and being alert and aware. Oh, and ladies, never leave your drink unattended or unwatched - that's a security risk that you need to avoid.
